When should I involve an electrician in a renovation?
As early as possible, ideally while layouts are still being planned and before first fix. Early input helps confirm socket, lighting, appliance and circuit requirements before finished surfaces restrict access.
What is first fix electrical work?
First fix is the installation of concealed cabling, back boxes and circuit routes before walls and ceilings are plastered or closed.
What is second fix electrical work?
Second fix takes place after plastering and much of the finishing work. It includes fitting sockets, switches, light fittings and other visible electrical accessories, followed by testing and commissioning.
Does a renovation mean the house needs rewiring?
Not necessarily. The correct scope depends on the age and condition of the existing installation, test results, the rooms being altered and the new electrical demand. Some projects need only new or modified circuits, while others justify a partial or complete rewire.
Can you work from architectural or kitchen plans?
Yes. Plans are useful for establishing layouts, but appliance specifications, lighting decisions and equipment requirements should also be confirmed before first fix.
Can I supply my own light fittings and accessories?
