When to get it checked

Is your fuse board still suitable for your home?

An older board is not automatically unsafe, but it may provide less protection than a correctly specified modern distribution board. Inspection and testing determine what your property actually needs.

Arrange an assessment

Old-style fuses

The board still uses replaceable fuse wire, ceramic fuses or older protective devices.

Frequent tripping

Breakers or circuits repeatedly trip and the underlying cause has not been identified.

Visible warning signs

You notice heat, discolouration, scorching, corrosion, buzzing or crackling around the board.

More electrical demand

You are planning an EV charger, electric shower, extension, renovation or other substantial new load.

Unclear installation history

The circuits are poorly labelled, the board has been altered over time or you do not know when it was last inspected.

What the work covers

More than a simple box change

A proper fuse board replacement includes the checks needed to reconnect your existing circuits safely. If testing uncovers a separate issue, we explain what has been found before additional work proceeds.

INSPECT

Initial assessment

We assess the existing board, incoming supply, circuit arrangement, earthing and bonding.

TEST

Circuit testing

Relevant circuits are checked to identify faults that could affect a safe replacement.

INSTALL

Modern distribution board

The old board is removed and suitable protective devices are fitted for the installation.

PROTECT

Appropriate protection

The board is specified with circuit protection suitable for the property and current requirements.

LABEL

Clear circuit identification

Circuits are organised and labelled so the finished board is easier to understand and isolate.

CERTIFY

Final verification

The completed work is tested and the applicable completion certification is provided.

How it works

A clear process from assessment to certification

We plan the work around the condition of your installation, not a one-size-fits-all board swap.

Assess the existing installation

We inspect the board, discuss any electrical problems and consider planned additions such as an EV charger or renovation.

Provide a clear quotation

Your quotation reflects the board specification, number of circuits and any identifiable remedial work required.

Replace the fuse board

The supply is safely isolated, the old board is removed and the new distribution board is installed.

Test, label and certify

We verify the finished installation, label the circuits and provide the applicable documentation.

How much does fuse board replacement cost?

The price depends on the number of circuits, protective devices required and the condition of the existing installation. Our cost guide explains the main factors, while an on-site assessment provides the most reliable quotation for your home.

Common questions

Fuse board replacement FAQs

Does an old fuse board always need to be replaced?
Not automatically. The board, protective devices and wider installation should be inspected and tested. We will recommend replacement only where the condition or suitability of the installation warrants it.
Does replacing the fuse board mean my house needs rewiring?
No. Fuse board replacement and house rewiring are different jobs. However, testing may identify defects in existing circuits that need repair before they can be safely reconnected.
How long does a fuse board replacement take?
A straightforward replacement can often be completed within one working day. Additional time may be needed if testing identifies problems with circuits, earthing, bonding or previous alterations.
Will the electricity be switched off?
Yes. The supply must be isolated during parts of the replacement. Tell us in advance about medical equipment, alarms, refrigeration or home-working requirements so the planned interruption can be discussed.
Can you inspect the board before I commit to replacement?
Yes. We can assess the existing installation and explain the recommended next step before you approve the work.
Will I receive certification?
The completed installation will be tested and the applicable electrical completion certification will be provided.
