FAQ
What does it cost to fully charge an Electric Vehicle at home?
The cost of charging your electric vehicle will vary depending on your electricity providers rates and the hours of the day you choose to charge. Many of our clients have reported that by charging overnight at home with subsidized night rate electricity, they get a full charge for little as €2.
Where is the Home Charge Point Installed?
The Home Charge Point is located on an external wall near your car’s parking spot. This is simple to install in most homes. However, having a charge point mounted in an apartment without your own parking space or a terraced house with a public footpath at your front door can be challenging.
Can I plug my car into my regular house socket or can I use an extension cable?
Using dedicated electrical vehicle supply equipment is the best way to charge an electric car at home (EVSE). This consists of an outdoor socket that is properly weatherproofed and a residual current system that can accommodate both DC and AC current pulses. The EVSE should be operated by a separate circuit from the distribution board. Extension leads, even when uncoiled, should not be used because they are not equipped to bear maximum rated current for long periods of time.
How long does it take to charge an Electric Vehicle?
There are three different ways to charge:
• Charging time at home: 6-8 hours*
• 2-6* hours of public charging
• Fast charging will reach an 80 percent charge in as little as 25* minutes.
*Because electric cars come in a variety of styles and battery capacities, these times can vary.
Can I disconnect my car even if it is not fully charged?
Yes, it’s safe to disconnect the charger at any stage!
How do I apply for my Home Charger SEAI grant?
Before your Electric Vehicle Home Charger can be mounted, you must apply for and be accepted for the grant. For more information about how to apply for a grant, go to the SEAI website.
Does an Electric Vehicle cost less than a conventional car?
Electric vehicles have a higher selling price than traditional cars due to their relative newness. However, a number of factors contribute to the total cost being lower.
Here are some of them:
- Up to €5,000 in VRT relief at zero percent.
- A purchase grant of up to €5,000 is available.
- A €120 reduction in the road levy.
- Maintenance costs are lower (due to fewer moving parts), and fuel costs are significantly lower.
